Dariush Afshar
President and CEO
A 2001 graduate of Georgetown University with a BA in Business Administration, Dariush founded Digital Volunteers with a vision. He wanted to provide an online service which would help to bridge the digital divide worldwide by providing nonprofit organizations with access to technology-savvy people and equipment.
He founded Digital Volunteers in 2001, after years of involvement in community service and social entrepreneurship led him to see a need that was going unmet. At Georgetown, he was Founder and Chair of the Youth Venture chapter which matched John Carroll Scholars and Washington area high school students seeking to establish their own businesses and associations. He worked for Virginia Governor Mark Warner on programs that address the lack of access to technology for Virginia citizens. In 2001-2002, Dariush was a Fulbright Scholar in France where he investigated the costs of financial distress to the telecommunications industry, resulting from the significant financial debt assumed during the 3G licensing auctions. He has also conducted field research in the Czech Republic on the ethical challenges facing business executives in Central and Eastern Europe. He was an intern with the International Telecommunications Union at the UN in Geneva. He also worked for the Department of Agriculture's Fund for Rural America, distributing distance-learning grants to American farmers. He has also studied Graduate Economics at the University College Cork, in Ireland, where he served as a George Mitchell Scholar from 2003-2004. Dariush has also worked as a Business Analyst in McKinsey & Co.'s Silicon Valley Office, focusing on high-tech clients. He is currently a member of the Corporate Business Development Group at Cisco Systems where he focuses on both wireless and global investment and acquisition opportunities. Dariush also serves on a number of for-profit Boards as a representative of Cisco in its portfolio companies.
